BREWED FOR YOU FOR OVER 21 YEARS!
In 2001, Chris Garrett founded BREW4U in Belmont, California as a part-time passion project while working full-time in tech. Little did he know, this side project would become a full-time business.
It is nearly impossible to describe every memory, milestone, innovation, and product created throughout all the years, but this page will touch on major points of our story: who we are, what this community means to us, and how we plan to continue to give back to those who surround us. OUR STORY
Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company's founder and CEO Chris Garrett, cultivated the skills he utilized to build Devil's Canyon from his upbringing in New Mexico on his family's ranch. At an early age, Chris learned from his grandfather how to build, restore, and reassemble nearly everything on the ranch. When broken, an object was either fixed, repurposed, or used until it disintegrated. Construction, agriculture, and operating farm equipment were part of his day-to-day life! This was a necessity, as they were miles away from any sort of repair shop or store. Without even realizing it, this was the beginning of Chris’s dedication to sustainability.
Over the summer of Chris's junior year in high school, he was given the choice to work on the ranch (a 4am - 8pm work day) or go to school; he easily chose to leave and go to school. He took classes at Menlo College, a small business school located in Northern California. During that summer Chris fell in love with the campus, the people, and the area. For the next four years, Chris attended Menlo College.
From studying multiple fields like technology, biosciences, business, and a handful of others, Chris discovered his expertise in tech, many life skills, and his love for brewing. His first experience brewing was actually in the lab at the campus! He now sits on the Board of Trustees of the College and continues to give back however he can.
Post-grad, Chris started working for tech companies like Facebook, Microsoft, and Disney while home brewing on the side. We can’t share all the details, but he was actually the brains behind significant tech innovations you likely use today. Yep, he’s REALLY smart. After years in the tech industry, Chris wasn’t happy. He was missing something tangible; he wanted to see the reaction of people who interacted with his work. In technology, you can’t really touch your code or data set. So, he started his own brewing company on the side of his day job with one of his buddies.
The two partners began brewing for themselves, restaurants, and other breweries in the area. They stayed up late throughout the week and all day on the weekends, perfecting their craft, learning how flavors and ingredients work with each other and which ones don’t. The science background came in handy!
Chris left the Big Tech world to brew full-time after deciding to follow his passion. In 2003 after accidentally winning a beer competition, BREW4U adopted the name "Devil's Canyon Brewing Company", named after the historical name of Belmont Canyon (ask and we'll share the full story). Soon after, Chris's wife Kristiann, left her teaching career to join the growing family business.
BREW4U was officially founded in Belmont in 2001. Chris won the beer competition in 2003 which initiated the creation of Devil's Canyon Brewing Company. The brewery started at a small facility in Belmont, which opened every last Friday of the month. Hundreds of people came out to dance to the live music, drink the freshest craft beer in the area, and hang out with their friends and family. After outgrowing the last Fridays, opening EVERY Friday became a regular thing. Sound familiar?
The team brewed in Belmont until they outgrew the facility and needed to find something bigger. After finding the current facility in 2012, Devil's Canyon officially made it home on January 3rd, 2013. Before Devil's Canyon, the venue was a Tesla R&D facility! At first visit, the building was not fit for any business to move in – it was set to be torn down. Because of Chris's extensive background in repairing and reusing things, Chris and his team decided to fix the entire facility, as its structure had potential.
They rebuilt beams, dug and reset the concrete, rewired all the electricity, and cleaned the entire place out. Chris reused wood from previous projects for cosmetic accents, pipes and metals from tech buildings for infrastructure, and traded with scrap yards for furniture and equipment. If someone tried to throw it out, the DC crew was there to step in. With all the countless pieces that came from numerous facilities to rebuild the brewery, there are so many stories and memories that are imbedded into the brew walls. Winning awards for sustainability are just a by-product of Chris's natural instinct, and it is implemented into day-to-day brewery life with ease!

TODAY...
We continue to build on the captivating history of Devil's Canyon and are excited for all the future endeavors. From in the brew house to out in the trade, we work hard to portray who we are through quality craft beer. So, as a small business, we are proud to share all the accomplishments and current projects we are involved in!
Every Friday is Beer Friday here at Devil's Canyon! Once a week, we are throw a party and everyone is invited. Beer Friday is all about kicking back and having a good time with our friends and fans. Grab one of our hand-crafted brews from the main bar inside or container bar located in the Beer Garden. Craft beer tastes better with food and music, so every Friday we bring in local food trucks and live music to join us. Be on the lookout, we also hold special events such as axe throwing, breadmaking, and charcuterie classes on special Fridays. Visit our DC calendar for more info on future fun.
From Saturday through Thursday, we host private events of all kinds! With such a unique and versatile venue, we host events like weddings, Mitzvahs, corporate events, holiday parties, and many more! See our private events page for more details on how to book the space for your next event.
The brewery is never quiet, even behind the scenes! We always have something going on in the brewhouse. Between brewing DC craft beer and keeping up with contract brews, our brewers are always kept busy! Straight from tanks to cans, our craft beer is distributed throughout the Bay Area Peninsula. Find your favorite brew in local retail stores like: Bianchini's Market, Robert's Market, Holly Market, Whole Foods, BevMo, Delucchi's Market, The Willows Market, Dragger's Market, and Total Wine.
Throughout the year we strive to give you the best beer experience possible, but we also value giving back to the community. Devil's Canyon as a whole, finds ways to donate our time and efforts into something that is bigger than us as individuals. Just this past year, we teamed up with several local foundations to further their impact in our community. From holding events like the 9th annual West Coast Craft Can Invitational, we raised over $12,000 for local non-profit, Peninsula Space Open Trust (POST). Blood drive donations with Vitalant were a success and over X pints were donated to save lives. Hosting special events on Beer Fridays, like 'United Against Hate' Poetry Slams sponsored by the Community Foundation of San Carlos, work towards building and connecting those in our community to stand up to combat hate together. Community is important to us and we will continue to find ways to make a positive change for those who surround us.
There are many parts of our story that we could go on about but couldn't fit into our short biography. We would love to share more with you if you are interested! Visit us on a Friday and ask someone from our team or stop by during the week to chat and grab some beer to-go.
